A working wikipedia requires a working team for that specific language. It also means that there should be a standard system of writing, so that interlinking between articles can be facilitated in the most optimal way for all users. For this reason, it is good practice that we write using one writing system, so that all pages can be presented equally, and so that our open-source materials will be open not only to readers but to tool developers who require a source for testing and building.

Once the system is in place, however, it is open to discussion within the language community and contributers to the individual wikipedia project whether there might be additional presentation formats for the Wikipedia materials. This means in fact that, following the lead of the Kazakh project, the Erzya Wikipedia project might opt to install a switch and required php code to facilitate presentation and editing of the articles in more than one writing system, e.g. Cyrillics and some form of Latin script. This, however, is an issue to be dealt with in the language community and contributers to the individual wikipedia project.

There are, of course, reasons why and why not to have more than one writing system used in the presentation and editing of all articles in the Erzya Wikipedia project. One reason for using the Cyrillic script is that a vast majority of popular texts, teaching materials, media of enlightenment, etc. have been published in the Cyrillic script, allbeit these majority texts span a time period from the 1920s to the 2020s, and therefore writing norms have changed and been amended numerous times. On the other hand, there is also a richness of folklore texts published outside Mordovia and the Russian Federation that are available in Latin transcription, and there has also been some elementary publication work outside of Mordovia and the Russian Federation that use a Latin-based script for rendering the same language norm as is rendered by the Cyrillic-based script.

When working with a small language community, it is important not to close anyone out. For practical language purposes, however, any issue of script usage should be limited to the active contributing community, and regardless of their intensions, any comments made by onlookers should only be noted as external suggestions. If these intensive onlookers, however, take away from the time volunteered by active members of the Erzya Wikipedia (read: any specific individual Wikipedia project), we can assert that this onlooker is, in fact, interferring with our achievement as a Wikipedia project and detracting from our optimal production.

In fact there is a law in Mordovia that proclaims that "propaganda of enmity and disregard for any language or discrimination on the basis of language is unacceptable".
There is also documentation addressed to this same law which makes reference to orthographic language norms of Erzya and Moksha, with the inherent presence of a Cyrillic script. This cannot be denied. And there is also a law signed in Moscow from 2002 which indicates the default use of Cyrillic-based scripts in the Russian Federation, on the one hand, and the possibility for establishing other legal writing scripts, on the other. These are legal references to what writing systems are used for languages of the Russian Federation at large, and Mordovia in particular.

Well aware that Erzya is spoken and propogated beyond the boundaries of Mordovia and the Russian Federation, my suggestion as a language user, researcher and open-source language technology developer, is that a discussion be made as to whether the language community and especially the community of Erzya Wikipedia developers is prepared at this point in time to embark on the journey of multiple-presentation and -editing of the myv.wikipedia.org project. Based on the age and size of the Erzya-language Wikipedia project, we should allow one year for this first round of discussion (18.8.2020–18.8.2021). This discussion will require commitments from those in favor of multiple-presentation and -editing, on the one hand, but it will also require that propaganda of enmity and discrimination on the basis of language be discontinued, on the other. Hence, I ask that the Erzya-language contributor [[User:Тарас Дем'яненко|Тарас Дем'яненко]] consider how he can best contribute to a multiple-presentation -editing scenario (clean code, this is not social media) an improved familiarity with the literary language norms (no designation of script), on the one hand, and that the outsider [[User:Soul Train|Soul Train]] restrain from further detraction from our voluntary time, on the other. To any members of Meta-Wikimedia, please allow for language contributors to achieve their own consensus for a most beneficial and productive outcome in the Erzya Wikipedia project. Turmoil and harrassment is always distressing, let us hope that the developers of the Erzya Wikipedia project can reach a consensus that is sound and only strengthens the linguistic and cultural state of the Erzya language community.
